Miniature Art Doll

A few years ago I became fascinated with art dolls after reading an issue of Art Doll magazine. Unfortunately that magazine is no longer in publication but I still love creating miniature art quilts, art dolls and other pieces of wearable and decorative fabric art.

The first beading classes I ever taught were to quilters that were incorporating beads and embellishments in their tiny art quilt creations. Many of these accomplished women were also making beautiful art dolls. While most of these dolls were quite large, I decided to start making a few miniature, beaded doll projects of my own. You can incorporate a variety of art supplies and craft materials into your art doll projects.

I have experience with a multitude of craft and jewelry making techniques including:

  • Fused glass
  • Beading
  • Sewing
  • Macrame
  • Pin weaving

The photo at the top of this post shows my first attempt at making an art doll. I used one of my fused glass cabochons as the dolls face and embellished it with a lot of beads and fibers. It was a fun little project, which went together relatively quickly and didn’t take a lot of supplies. I used a fat quarter batik fabric for the body and bits of leftover yarns and beads for the embellishments.
