Who wouldn’t want to live in a healthier, happier, more functional home if they had the choice? The problem with many homes today is that they don’t always suit the people living in them. This means that the residents certainly don’t feel happy, or find the home functional.
It’s important that your home meets your needs in terms of your lifestyle and how you spend your time at home, as well as looks great. Here you’ll find 15 quick tips for a healthier, happier, more functional home. See what you can do to make yours better!
Reconsider Your Furniture
Your furniture is one of, if not the most important aspect of your home. If you don’t have the right furniture, you can expect the rest of your home to be thrown into chaos. Well, maybe that’s a little extreme; but it certainly won’t perform well or look great. Your furniture should be comfortable, seat your family, and you should take into account whether you entertain regularly. Do your children bring their friends over? Do you have coffee dates at home with your friends? Make sure your furniture is right for the space and for the way you tend to relax. You can work everything else around your furniture, as they tend to be the centerpieces of each room.
Explore New Layouts
Maybe the layout you’ve had for years can be improved upon. It can be scary to step outside of your comfort zone, but just try a few things out and see how you feel. You can use online apps that help you to see what will work before you even lift a finger. Just make sure you get your measurements right. You might find that a different layout makes your room look more spacious, or perhaps even cozier.
Learn How To Layer
Layering up certain items can look very chic, and bring texture to an otherwise boring space. You can layer rugs, cushions, throws, and just about any other textural thing that you desire. Take a look at Pinterest boards to see what other people are doing and get a good idea of what you can do in your own space.
Incorporate Healthy Accessories
You want your space to be healthy, so incorporate accessories to support that goal. You can include Himalayan salt lamps, and even plants, which purify the air and make the atmosphere a better place. Instead of candles, which can be toxic, you may also want to include an aromatherapy diffuser to make the place smell great while enjoying the benefits of the essential oils!
Let In Natural Light
Natural light is very important for health and productivity. Without it, you may depend on artificial light, which can actually have the opposite effect. Make sure you open those curtains or blinds from time to time and let the sunlight shine in.
Make Sure Home Is Free From Toxic Materials
Your home should be free from toxic materials, as well as other health risks if you’re going to make it as healthy as possible. Having a lot of texture in the home can be good, but there is such a thing as too much; and when this happens, dust and other things tend to get stuck in the home, causing allergies and many other problems. You may also want to keep your eye out for bugs and other pests, calling pest control if you know you have a problem. This can be due to gaps in your doors, or even gaps and holes in hidden spaces, so keep an eye out, your family’s health is at stake.
Child and Pet Proof Your Home
Make sure you child and pet-proof your home to keep your babies and fur babies as safe as possible. Make sure they can’t access toxic substances and materials, and that you don’t include plants and flowers in your home that your dog could have a reaction to. It’s always a good idea to have a stair gate, whether you have a baby, dog, cat, or all three.
Install A Smart Alarm System
A smart alarm system can alert you that something is going on at home even when you’re not there. You can see what’s going on remotely, and have peace of mind that your home is safe at all times.
Don’t Clutter Up Your Space
Cluttering up space is something we’re all guilty of from time to time, but it’s important you stay mindful of it and remember to keep it under control. Clutter can weigh heavy on the mind and make you feel even more stressed out. It doesn’t even have to be clutter that is taking up usable space; having lots of small ornaments in your space can visually clutter it up. You’re usually better off picking one or two larger accessories, than lots of smaller accessories. Your home will look much more professionally put together and far less cluttered.
Personalize Your Home
Make sure you add some of your personality to your home, whether it’s a pattern or color you really like, or pictures of your loved ones. You want people to know you live there.
Make Sure You Have Plenty Of Storage
Storage is key if you’re going to live happily. You can even buy furniture that doubles up as storage so you don’t have to worry about taking up too much room in a small home. Explore your options and see what works for you. Again, this is all about keeping clutter at bay and your possessions in good condition.
Make The Most Of Your Usable Space
Make sure you’re making the most of the usable space that you have. For instance, if you have lots of cupboards in the kitchen, fill them full of things that you use on a regular basis. Don’t keep your old wedding china in there, chances are, you haven’t even looked at it since you got married, anyway. Keeping certain items for sentimental value is fine, but why not put them somewhere out of the way, like the attic, so you can make the most of the nearby space you have at your disposal?
Choose Colors That Make You Feel Good
Colors can have a huge impact on your mood, so if you want a healthier, happier home that positively impacts your mental health, choose the right colors. Blue is great for feeling peaceful and relaxed, as are other natural colors, like green. Yellow can be a happy color, as can orange. Red can look very pretty and sometimes glamorous but bear in mind that it isn’t the best color to have in a bedroom as it can be too energizing. Explore your favorite colors and their moods so you can put them in the right place.
Cultivate Experiences For Your Home
Make sure you spend your money on things that cultivate experiences for your home. For example, a good grill to entertain, a new DVD, great garden furniture, etc. Anything that allows you to live a happier life with your loved ones (that you’ll get a lot of use out of) is a good purchase.
Have Rooms Free From Technology
Don’t fill every room up with technology. Have certain rooms free from it so you can go there if you need to wind down. Your bedroom shouldn’t have a TV in it, for instance. You want to associate this room with sleep.
