Prom time, it’s almost here! Are you getting ready for your middle school, high school or college prom or helping your daughter get ready for her special day? Here’s some tips and tricks to help you find your perfect prom dress.
Finding the perfect dress has got to be the number one consideration. You can’t pick out your shoes, accessories or even figure out your hair and makeup until you’ve decided what style and color dress you are going to rock out on your special night out. And once you’ve got your outfit figured out you’ll want to make sure to take great event, prom and wedding photos to remember the prom for years to come.
The Perfect Night Out
Your prom date will probably be the one picking out your corsage (I always liked the simple but elegant wrist corsages so as not to have to worry about pinning a giant bunch of flowers onto your dress). Once you’ve decided you are going to prom (my daughter skipped her high school prom but did have a lot of fun at her 8th grade graduation dance) it’s time to pick out your dress and accessories. Here’s a quick list of what you might go shopping for:
- Prom Shoes
- Prom Dress
- Prom Hair
- Prom Makeup
- Prom Jewelry
- Prom Transportation
You could do you own hair and makeup but I always thought it was more fun to splurge on getting your hair and nails done, and maybe your makeup too. After all, how often do you actually go to prom? I went to my high school prom and to the engineering banquet during my Junior and Senior years at college. The banquets were just like the prom just with a better hair, makeup and a much more stylish outfit.
Little House on the Prairie Dresses
Back in the old days, or maybe just back when I was in high school a million years ago, Gunne Sax style dresses by Jessica McClintock were all the rage. They were usually full-length gowns made with tons of linen, gauze, lace, ribbons and bows. No one would be caught dead in anything like that at today’s prom, but they were really popular back in the day.
In fact, they were so popular you could even buy Gunne Sax sewing patterns and make your own dress. They were a bit fancy though so I never made a Gunne Sax gown but my mom made me a light blue gown with spaghetti straps for the one and only beauty pageant I entered (on a dare from my best friend) when I was 14. Then, a few years later, when I was trying to figure out what to wear to my senior prom, my mom came to the rescue again. I picked out a hot pink gauze with a huge white gauze off shoulder ruffle trimmed out with loads of pink satin ribbon. The horror!
Modern Prom Attire
I thought I was quite a catch with that homemade beauty – that might be a slightly sarcastic comment. Fast forward a few decades to when my daughter was getting ready to pick out a dress for her middle school dance (I think she was in 8th grade) I took her to one of the local malls. The style was the shorter and glittier the better.
I seem to remember metallics were a big thing that year. And the cool thing about the dress she picked, she could actually wear it after the prom to dinners and other dressier events. Not like the gauze and ruffle monstrosities we wore back when I was in high school – if you weren’t at prom – or maybe a Halloween costume party – those dresses really had no business being out in public – LOL!
So, there you go, my top tips and tricks to find your perfect prom dress. I would love to hear your stories about your own prom or you son or daughter’s prom!
