Knowing When to Hire a Professional Electrician

I like to think of myself as an independent woman. Especially after going through my divorce 7+ years ago I want to prove to myself that I’m capable of doing most things myself. I’ll admit it – I do have a bit of a stubborn streak and have a hard time asking for help even when I need it. How do you know when to hire a professional electrician?

But when it comes to certain DIY and home improvement repairs, I know that from time-to-time I might actually have to call in the help of a professional contractor. I know when it comes to HVAC, plumbing or electrical work, those kinds of repairs are all beyond my skill set. Especially when it comes to doing any electrical repairs, that is way beyond my comfort zone. Heck, my ex-husband is an electrician so I know how difficult electrical repairs can be.

Handyman Versus Electrician

Not wanting to become the human lightning rod, I recently had to call on the services of a local handyman. I was redoing my guest bathroom and was changing out the ugly, old vanity strip lights to a couple of decorative blown glass pendant lights I found on sale at a local home improvement store. That was a lot of spaghetti wire that needed to be changed out and besides knowing how to turn off the circuit breaker for that particular bathroom, I had no clue where to even start.

That’s when I knew it was time to call in the services of an expert. While you might be able to rely on the services of a general handyman for many of your home improvement projects, when it comes to utilities I recommend going with a licensed and insured contractor. Electrical repairs can be quite complicated and unless you have prior experience in the industry, can be extremely dangerous to do it yourself.

My son and ex-husband are both electricians so I was used to seeing members of my own family do all kind of simple and basic repairs. But when it came to more complicated stuff (and anything having to do with crawling around in the cramped attic space) my ex still called on one or more of his helpers to do the actual grunt work.

Perfect Solution for Your Home Repair Needs

While you might be able to figure out how to change out a ceiling fan by yourself, more difficult projects such as circuit breaker upgrades, adding outlets or installing an entire outdoor lighting system should only be completed by an experienced journeyman or master electrician.

With years of experience behind them, a contractor has all the resources, proper materials and licensed electricians to meet your commercial, residential or industrial electrical needs. From new construction, equipment installations, upgrades, maintenance servicing and commercial repair, reach out to an experienced contractor for all your electrical contracting needs.

Future DIY Projects

The next home renovation project I want to tackle at home is upgrading the kitchen area. We’ve picked out paint and upgraded the old, dingy white appliances to stainless steel. We’ve even installed a new farmhouse style sink and faucet but want to do more including replacing or refacing the cabinets.

We’ll probably add a backsplash throughout the kitchen after painting but are trying to figure out what to do with the large kitchen island. We’re thinking of granite or some sort of solid surface counter tops, at least on the island. But that area tends to get a bit dark, especially at night. Light bulb moment – I think we’ll have to enlist the services of another electrician to help us install some sort of light fixture above the island – GENIUS!

So, there you go – the top tips to know when you can do the work yourself or when to hire a professional electrician.
