Like many people, if you were looking to save money, you probably moved into an older house rather than a new build. Time flies by though, money gets allocated elsewhere, and it’s completely understandable if your home still has the same old decor from when you first moved in. Here are some tips for modern DIY home decor ideas.
Over time you don’t notice that things you once did, they literally ‘become part of the furniture’ and you get used to using the odd old furniture that you were always going to replace or staring at the walls you were adamant you would redecorate as soon as you moved in. One day, you realize that you’ve been living in your house for years and it is time to give it an update, your stamp and something a little more modern.
Your home should be somewhere you look forward to going to every night and it should be somewhere that you are proud to bring your friends and relatives to. Here’s how:
Let There Be Light
It’s not always obvious how much of a difference lighting makes to your home until you add some new light fixtures. You’ll want to find something unique that fits into your budget too. You can find some nice, slightly used lighting options at your local thrift store that only need a light cleaning or a bit of paint. Refurbishing old lamps and lighting fixtures can take an item from shabby chic to looking like new.
Make sure you have lots of light sources such as table lamps and floor lamps throughout your home as this will increase the elegance. That will make your place look modern but to bring it into the 21st century you will want to get techy with things like being able to turn on your lights by clapping your hands or have them on timers. Look into smart light bulbs which allow you to remotely turn them on, off, dim them, and even change the color depending on what brand you buy.
Let There Be Space
Many of today’s modern homes, even if they aren’t big, create the feeling of lots of space by having open plan design. If your house is older you will likely have lots of rooms and doors, but have an interior design or engineer take a look and find out if you can knock down a few walls to create an open floor plan. Modern houses have open floor plans where one space flows into the next. Having the main living areas open to each other allows plenty of natural light to seep deeper into the spaces as well as give you more space for entertaining.
Let There Be Life
Bring the outdoors in with by adding some indoor plants. Herbs and flowers are a great way to add greenery to your home, but it’s also perfect for you to have indoor plants. House plants not only look good, they also improve the quality of the air inside your home which is an added health benefit.
Let There Be Adventure
While keeping things minimal and simple is a very modern interior design, it’s always good to add some adventure throughout your home. A feature wall in the bedroom, or a splash of new tiles in the bathroom will make a big difference. But, don’t over do it, just add one or two new design elements around your house without going overboard. This is a great way to make your home more modern but still keep its overall classic design.Â
