Review of Stuffitts Shoe Savers

Please note: this is a reprint of an old article that first appeared on the now defunct Run Diva website.

I’m always on the lookout for gear that can help me out with my amateur running and cycling endeavors, such as running shoe speed lacing systems. I recently came upon an ad for Stuffitts Shoe Savers, in the November/December issue of the southeast edition of Competitor Magazine. I contacted the marketing rep for Stuffittts shoe savers and requested a sample pair be sent out so that I could test them for Run Diva.

What is a Stuffitt Shoe Saver?

Stuffitts are a cedar stuffed shoe insert, with a removable, washable cover. Stuffitts help your shoes dry fast and also help to eliminate shoe odor. Stuffitts Shoe Savers come attached to a nylon carrying strap. You simply place the Stuffitts inside your wet shoes, to help them dry out fast. Independent testing has shown Stuffitts absorb 60% of a shoes excess moisture within one hour.

I used to use wadded-up newspaper to dry out my running and cycling shoes, anytime I did any training in the rain. I don’t subscribe to any newspapers, so I usually had to go out and buy a paper to dry my shoes out. I don’t recommend placing your wet shoes in the dryer, especially cycling shoes, with their large bike cleat attached to the bottom of the shoe. CLANG – CLANG – CLANG says the dryer…. And newspaper has to be replaced once it gets wet and the newsprint gets all over your hands.

Tornado Training

On Friday I went for a short run. I live in SE Florida, so I can train and race year-round outdoors. It was sprinkling out when I started my run, no big deal, sure beats running on a hot, sunny day. About the halfway point into the run, it started to pour. I finished the run in a torrential deluge and tornadic winds – FUN TIMES! Yes, there actually was a tornado watch in effect, I learned later, I’m not exaggerating.

I thought this would be the perfect time to try out my red Stuffitts. I removed the insoles from my Brooke T6 racing flats, and placed a Stuffitt inside of each shoe. No more checking, changing, adding dry newspaper. No more getting my hands full of black newsprint. Stuffitts worked really well to dry out my shoes quickly. It usually took a couple of days for my shoes to completely dry out using the newspaper method.

Stuffitts can be conveniently stowed in my sports bag, so they are always with me anytime I go for a bike or run workout. No more worrying about getting caught out in the rain. Stuffitts to the rescue!
