Do you want to give your kitchen a rustic, farmhouse feel? Here are a few kitchen décor ideas to try out that could help to bring an earthy, farmhouse, rustic charm to your home.
Choosing Rustic Kitchen Countertops
If you’ve got synthetic countertops in your kitchen (Formica, Corian, etc.), you may want to upgrade your countertops for a more rustic look. Instead, opt for materials such as butcher block wood or sealed concrete. Alternatively, you could try a stone material such as granite, quartz or even marble.
Some countertop materials are more expensive than others – especially granite and marble – but they are worth the investment to bring a natural touch to your kitchen decor and also add value to your home. Make sure that these countertops (butcher block, concrete, stone) are sealed to protect them from damage.
Using Natural Floor Materials
You may also want to consider a natural floor option such as wood, bamboo or cork. Whatever flooring you choose, they all need to be sealed to protect them from damage. You have the option to match your kitchen flooring with your countertops or use a contrasting material for a more dramatic look.
Expose a Brick Wall
Another rustic feature to consider adding to your kitchen is an exposed brick wall. This can be a messy job as it involves stripping away all the drywall, or lath and plaster if you live in an older home, so you may want to get a professional to help you with this project. After exposing the brick wall you should consider adding a sealant as this will make the brickwork easier to clean and less prone to damage.
Sack Cloth Curtains
Sack cloth curtains make for a charming rustic kitchen feature. You can make the sack cloth curtains yourself or bought online premade. It’s also possible to make curtains out of other repurposed materials such as vintage linens (tablecloths, table runners or placemats) for a similar rustic effect.
Stoneware Coffee Mugs
For drinking coffee in the morning, why not upgrade to a more rustic drinking container option? Stoneware mugs don’t just have a more traditional feel, they’re also sturdier and less prone to chipping. Stoneware mugs also make a great ornamental piece to match the rest of the rustic decor in your kitchen.
Repurpose Collectibles as Vases
You can also get creative when it comes to finding vases for flowers. Rather than using a traditional glass or ceramic vase, consider repurposing a container such a watering can or wine bottle. This will add another element to your kitchen’s rustic theme.
Traditional Lighting Styles
There are also many ways to make your kitchen lighting more rustic. Edison bulbs are a popular look – they can be wrapped around a beam on your kitchen ceiling for an even more charming look. You don’t have to use power-hungry filament bulbs – there are LED bulbs out there in the traditional Edison bulb style that are more energy efficient than traditional bulbs.
