Create Your Own Loom Woven Craft Projects

Arts and crafts is one of my favorite topics to cover on the Creative Cottage blog. I’ve always been a bit crafty and once owned my own bead store, taught beading and fused glass classes, traveled the South Florida craft show circuit, and wrote how-to and DIY articles for Lapidary Journal, Jewelry Crafts, Beadwork, and a few other publications.

In addition to beading, I’ve also made quite a few sewing, macrame, weaving, and other fiber arts projects. With the pandemic kicking up again down here in Florida and the rest of the world, I find myself looking for more hobbies to keep myself occupied during my free time spent at home.

I decided to take a look at one of the old craft techniques I haven’t used in a while – pin-weaving or loom weaving. Weaving is a fun technique that lets you use up leftover bits of ribbons, yarns, wool roving, and other fibers while making a variety of bracelets, necklaces, and small wall hangings. I keep thinking about writing up a post or two on how to get started creating your own hand-woven pieces.

While this is just a brief introductory post to tapestry loom weaving, you can take a look at my photo gallery shown below to view a step-by-step process of my latest mini loom wall hanging project. There are many great books available online or from your local library on how to get started weaving on a little loom.

If you’re interested in making your own one-of-a-kind fiber art pieces, you can use anything from a top-of-the-line Mirrix tapestry loom to a handmade cardboard loom. I’m currently using a small wood loom I found on Amazon – I think it’s actually sold as a kid’s loom but I thought it was the perfect size to make bracelets and/or small wall hangings.

Wood Tapestry Loom Starter Kit

This is the exact loom I’m currently using for all my loom woven bracelet and miniature wall hanging projects. I found the DIY loom kit from a vendor on Amazon. This fiberart craft kit includes 2 small wooden weaving looms, 4 plastic tapestry needles, a wooden tapestry needle, a wooden weaving comb, and a wooden stick shuttle. It’s the perfect setup to start making your own loom woven creations and if you really enjoy weaving, you can always upgrade to a larger loom.

Scroll through the photos shown below to see a step-by-step gallery of my current loom-woven wall hanging. The finished piece, including the fringe, wood dowel, and ribbon hanging loop measures 8-inches wide by 17-inches long. The beauty of making your own loom-woven creations is you can make it any size you desire, from tiny loom-woven earrings to super-sized pieces that cover an entire wall.

Yarns, Ribbons, and Fibers for DIY Woven Wall Hangings

You’ll need a selection of colorful and textural yarns and fibers to get started creating loom woven wall hangings, necklaces, and bracelets. If you’re a knitter or crocheter, you probably already have loads of yarns to choose from. Making miniature wall hangings is a great way to use up any leftover bits of yarns, ribbons, wool roving, and other fibers taking up space in your craft room or artist studio.
