Caramelized Oven Roasted Brussels Sprouts Vegetable Side Dish

You can find fresh and frozen brussels sprouts at most grocery stores and green markets. I’ve even found a stalk of fresh brussels sprouts at one of my local farmer’s markets. Besides the ordinary green color, brussels sprouts also come in an interesting red-purple color. If you are interested in growing your own, most nursery centers and online seed companies offer brussels sprout plants and brussels sprout seeds for sale.

Brussels sprouts are a type of cruciferous vegetable and are a member of the Brassica family. Other types of cruciferous vegetables include cabbage, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and kolhrabi. Oven roasting Brussels sprouts creates a side dish with a pleasant, slightly caramelized flavor. Other methods of preparation, such as boiling or steaming, may result in Brussels sprouts with an unpleasant, bitter flavor.

Serve caramelized oven roasted Brussels sprouts along with whole wheat pasta, and stir-fried, marinated tofu for a completely vegetarian meal, which is also suitable for vegans. This recipe for oven-roasted Brussels sprouts makes approximately 4 to 6 individual servings.

Notes

Oven Roasted Brussels Sprouts Recipe Tips and Suggestions
  1. Adjust the amount of garlic, salt, and pepper used in this recipe, according to personal taste.
  2. For easy clean-up, line the baking sheet with a piece of aluminum foil or parchment paper.
  3. Don’t overcook the Brussels sprouts. It is better to have a slightly crunchy vegetable than an overcooked, and mushy vegetable.
  4. For a slightly spicy version of oven-roasted Brussels sprouts, toss in a few red pepper flakes, or a few shakes of hot pepper sauce, before placing the Brussels sprouts in the oven.
  5. Additional seasonings that can be added to the Brussels sprouts, in addition to, or instead of the garlic and lemon, include fresh thyme, Parmesan cheese, or thinly sliced onions, or shallots.
  6. Brussels sprouts look a bit like miniature cabbages. Purchase Brussels sprouts that are as fresh as possible. Choose bright green Brussels sprouts, with tightly packed leaves. If possible, purchase the desired quantity of individual Brussels sprouts, instead of prepacked Brussels sprouts.
