Enjoy this recipe for a delicious steak marinated in a sweet/tangy ginger dressing and topped with plenty of sautéed onions. If you’re not a fan of onions, you can substitute mushrooms for the onions or, go all out and top the marinated steaks with a big pile of sautéed onions and mushrooms!
I recently found a package of very thinly sliced eye round steaks at my local grocery store. Eye round is an affordable, yet rather tough cut of meat. If your budget allows, I recommend using skirt steak (AKA fajita meat) or flank steak for this recipe.
This smothered steak recipe can be served as part of a complete meal with your favorite side dishes. The photo at the top of this blog post shows how I served the steak along with roasted sweet potatoes and a side of kumquat with shaved fennel salad. This recipe for smothered steak can also include sautéed mushrooms if you like.
Delicious Steak Recipe Ideas
Another favorite way to eat the steak, after cooking, is to cut it into strips and serve on top of a large plateful of mixed salad greens – keto diet anyone!?! A local pizza restaurant near me makes a Thai-dye steak salad, which is a marinated steak served on top of a mixed green salad along with roasted chopped peanuts, roasted red bell peppers and a Thai-style peanut dressing. It is pretty dang yummy!

Marinated Steak Smothered with Sautéed Onions
Ingredients
- 2 pounds steak meat (eye round, skirt, flank, etc.)
- 1 bottle ginger marinade dressing
- 1 whole onion (red, yellow or white)
- 2 cups sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
Instructions
- Cut off any visible fat from the steaks.
- Place the steaks in a large bowl and cover with half of the ginger dressing.
- Cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 hours, or overnight, stirring occasionally.
- When you're ready to cook the steaks, place a tablespoon or two of olive oil in a large frying pan set over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onions, and sliced mushrooms if you're using them. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions begin to turn translucent.
- Remove the sautéed onions to a bowl or plate and set aside while you cook the steak.
- Add additional olive oil to the pan, if necessary, and turn the heat to medium high.
- Cook the steak, or steaks, for a minute or two on each side. If you are using a thicker cut of meat, adjust cooking time accordingly. You could also cook the steaks on your bbq grill if desired.
- Remove the cooked steaks to a large serving platter, sprinkle with salt and pepper if desired, and let rest for 5 minutes.
- Top the steaks with the grilled onions and mushrooms.
- Serve with additional ginger dressing, if desired, on the side.
