I think every home, condo, or apartment should have allotted space for a cozy reading nook. Your DIY reading nook can literally be a tiny corner of a room – anywhere you can fit a comfy chair, footstool, and warm and fuzzy blanket.

My current corner reading nook has traveled cross country from NY and back down to FL. I originally purchased a couple of pieces from Target while I was staying with my mom in way, way, upstate NY. I kind of got stuck up north when the pandemic hit about a month after I arrived in New York. Once things started making their way back to normal, I made the 1,400-mile trip back to South Florida.

Reading Nook Ideas for Adults

South Florida rental rates are sky-high, I’m working part-time as a freelance writer and can’t afford to get my own place at the moment. One of my good friends is living on his own in a 3/2 with den and he offered to rent me 2 rooms – 1 of the guest bedrooms plus the den that is off the kitchen.

I currently have my reading nook furniture set up in a corner of my bedroom, right next to my queen-size bed. The second room I’m renting from my friend is being used as my home office, craft studio, and workout area and is pretty crammed full of stuff. That’s why I decided to put my reading nook in the bedroom. I don’t always like sitting in bed to watch TV or enjoy a cup of coffee so my reading nook does double duty as my own personal, mini living room.

My Reading Nook

This is the original reading nook I created when I was staying in upstate New York. My mom was in the process of making a handmade pillowcase to coordinate with my Target OpalHouse pouf and pink butterfly chair. I really like the butterfly chair – it folds up for easy transport and has a removable cushion cover for easy cleaning.

New and Improved

Here’s how I set up my reading nook after I got back to Florida. You can see the awesome pillowcase my mom made for me featuring recycled men’s silk ties and a bit of leftover silk shantung I found in her sewing room. Excuse the pun, but I think the pillowcase helps tie everything together – pink, rose quartz, cranberry, light grey, charcoal, and a bit of off-white.

Inspire Inner Peace

A reading nook gives you a chance to put your feet up and relax while reading a book, enjoying a cup of herbal tea, or watching the current episode of your favorite reality TV show.

Target Inspired Reading Nook Furniture

Since the pandemic was in full swing when I first set up my private relaxation space I ended up taking a virtual shopping trip to Target to order my reading nook furniture. I purchased a rose quartz folding butterfly chair and cream, cranberry, and rose quartz pouf to serve as the base of my nook. I wanted a pillow to support my back while sitting in the chair so I raided my mom’s fabric stash. I found some scrap pieces of pale pink silk shantung and a bunch of pink, grey, and cranberry silk neckties and asked her to make a coordinating pillowcase. I used a grey quilted crushed velvet blanket, and a small grey and cream throw rug to complete the look.

Best Reading Nook Ideas

I have a few more items on my wish list to complete my reading nook. I’d like to get one of those small, adjustable computer carts on wheels. The cart will serve as a convenient spot to place snacks, a cold and frosty beverage, my laptop, or whatever. I also want to find one that has wheels so I can use it wherever I want, not just in my bedroom corner reading nook. And finding a computer cart that lets you adjust the height will let me choose between using it at couch height, bed height, or butterfly chair height.

I’d also like to move the 2 small throw rugs in my bedroom to my home office. I plan to replace the small rugs with a large room-size rug in a neutral colorway of cream, grey, and charcoal.
