How to Make Chef Lynn’s Classic Homemade Guacamole Recipe

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Creamy avocado dip makes a great snack that can be served along with corn chips, and an ice-cold beer, or a frosty glass of iced tea. Serve homemade guacamole as a topping for grilled meats or with fish tacos, tortillas, enchiladas, quesadillas, and other Tex-Mex style food.

If you are trying to stay away from crunchy corn chips and other salty food, this recipe for classic homemade guacamole also works well as a breakfast meal – avocado toast anyone?

The lime juice used in this recipe is reactive with metal. Instead of using a metal mixing bowl, use either a glass or plastic mixing bowl and a wooden or plastic mixing spoon when creating the guacamole dip. Some of the photographs that accompany this recipe show the guacamole being made in a stone mortar and pestle. I just happen to own about 15 or 20 mortar and pestle sets but I don’t think that’s normal – guess that makes me a bit of a FOODIE NERD!

Interesting factoid: Did you know that avocados, AKA alligator pears, are actually a type of berry and not a vegetable? Besides being delicious, avocados are filled with many vitamins and nutrients and have many health benefits.

Homemade Guacamole Recipe Tips and Suggestions

  • Be careful when working with avocados. They start to turn brown shortly after being cut open. The lime juice helps prevent the avocados from browning. Lemon juice can be substituted for the lime juice if desired, for a slightly different flavor.
  • This guacamole dip should be used immediately, but it will keep in the refrigerator for a day or two. Any longer and the avocados will start to turn brown, even with the addition of the lime juice.
  • Serve this dip with plenty of corn chips. Interesting varieties of corn chips, such as those made out of blue corn, can be found at most grocery stores. Tostito’s makes a whole grain chip flavored with a hint of lime, which makes a great accompaniment to the avocado spread.
  • Guacamole also makes a terrific side dish to serve along with fajitas, tacos, and other Tex-Mex style food.
  • The recipe calls for 2 cloves of garlic, more or less garlic may be added according to personal taste.
  • If you find red, yellow, or white onions too strong for your taste you can either leave them out or substitute them with a few sliced green onions.
  • A few dashes of your favorite hot sauce may be added, if desired, to create a spicy version of the guacamole spread.
