The Pros and Cons of Long Distance Romance

Note: This blog post is a sponsored conversation written by Lynn Smythe, the Founder and Chief Blogger for The Creative Cottage lifestyle blog. The opinions, thoughts, ideas and text are all mine.

When I first started The Creative Cottage lifestyle blog, I never thought I’d be writing much on the topic of looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right. But 5 years later, and it seems that Dating & Relationships is one of my most popular blog topics.

I’m not sure how that even happened. At first I did a few wedding posts on how to find the perfect venue and planning your special day. This eventually led to my first dating post about online dating for seniors.

If you’re looking for Mature Birmingham Dating then look no further than an online dating app. So, that was just an awfully long segue to introduce my next relationship article on the pros and cons of long-distance dating.

Surviving Long Distance Dating

You may be wondering if I’ve ever been in a long distance relationship. Thank you for asking, my answer is….sort of. Not to sound too vague, but I recently moved back to the Upstate New York area after a 28 year hiatus in Florida. What!?! Why the heck would anyone move back to NY after living in the Sunshine State?

The details on my move are best left to another article on taking care of sick relatives when you’re the only family they have left. Anyways, I had been living with a boyfriend/long-time friend in Florida. We have an on again off again type of relationship and I moved in and out of his house 3-times during the time I was in FL.

I liked the idea of sharing rent and having a companion/roommate but he wasn’t exactly the perfect boyfriend material. Wandering eyes and all that crap, again a better subject for a future blog post. But when I moved out this time he knew it was to temporarily help my mom out who’s been dealing with some health issues.

I’m actually not opposed to meeting someone new for friendship and companionship. And, if you’re looking for love in the UK, The Birmingham Dating Site is the best way to meet singles in your area.

Long Distance Romance – Yeah or Nay?

This current move might not be a short-term stint and I may actually end up living up here for at least a year or more to get everything straightened out. Can our relationship survive that long apart? I think by now we have kind of an open relationship – we are better friends than lovers so, if he starts dating someone in Florida while I’m in NY I’m not sure if I’ll be that upset.

I may even start exploring dating apps to see if there are any single, eligible men in my area. Online dating sites let you discover and Date Birmingham Singles near you while MeetUp Groups are a good way to meet people with similar interests.

We text message each other at least once a day and have long phone conversations 1 or 2 times a week. He keeps talking about selling his home in hot, humid and overcrowded south Florida. The idea is to find property in NC or SC that we can build a house on and live out our retirement years relatively debt free.

I think the romance has long gone out of the relationship as it’s kind of hard for me to be intimate with someone that I know cheats any chance he gets. As friends and roommates we’re fine, but does that mean I want to live in the same house with him again? Survey says – probably not.

If we end up with 5+ acres of land, we can pool our limited resources and each build a tiny home on the land. Then we’d both be free to date or not date whomever we want. But, I don’t want to see him kissing or hugging another person on a regular basis. Also, I’m not into threesomes and really don’t want to see him wandering around the homestead commando style – be free underwear, be free!
